The HSC is in a state of absolute emergency, and this situation cannot be allowed to continue. The solutions to this crisis cannot be planned for 1, 3 or 5 years’ time, they need to happen right now, because huge numbers of people are being failed, suffering, or even dying within the system right now.
A and E departments are under huge strain, many HSC trusts have been declaring critical incidents in recent weeks, and hospital bed pressures are extremely high. We do not feel that Keir Starmer and Wes Streeting are doing enough to safeguard patient lives and support HSC staff at present, and are hoping to work with Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly to encourage them to take immediate action to improve the situation.
The situation is complicated and will take time to fix, but there are things which could be done immediately to alleviate the pressure in some areas of the NHS. The new government could provide immediate, additional funding for the social care sector for example, and could review the punitive pension tax rules which are pushing some senior doctors out of the NHS workforce.
